With the success of the Transformers franchise, and more recently Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, our beloved boob-tube cartoons are proving to be a force at the box office. Here are 4 shows that dying to be revived in live-action form.
Hooooo!!!!!! Thundercats is probably the biggest and most popular cartoon of the era yet to be adapted. With interest from Michael Bay, James McAvoy, and Eddie Redmayne; this may become a reality sooner than later. It’s wide array of unique heroes and unforgettable villains (Mumm-ra!!!) , this coming-of-age King Arthur-like tale is poised to be a smash hit if given the opportunity.
How would it be done? Even though we can all get pretty tired of this format, I think an origin story is it’s best bet, as a lot of time has passed since its initial airing, and let’s be honest, we are dealing with a fantasy world full of cats. It could go a more lighter kid-friendly approach like the original series, but some ‘darkness’ like the image above might be the push it needs to finally get the green light in the world we live in now. HOLLYWOOD! Give us sight beyond sight!
So when CollegeHumor did their live-action parody a few years back (click here), it left a lot of people shocked and excited; both of which for the same reason. It wasn’t that far off! A lot of the themes, attitudes, and fashion trends from the TV show still carry on today, so any changes to the look would be minimal (except for cellphones in school of course). Can you imagine Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Scott Pilgirm vs the World) getting his hands on this property? It would be an hour and half dissection of pop culture, full of criticisms and nerdy observations at the most molecular level. AKA Internet: The Movie.
And the Masters of the Universe! While this has been attempted before (*cough cough Dolph Lungdren), I don’t think anyone has yet to see the true adaptation they are looking for. With CGI going full steam ahead, the high fantasy adaptation finally has the chance to takes us to the world of Eternia, and not hold back. No need for an origin story. We know He-Man. Give me sword-wielding battles, spell-casting, and Skeletor laughing his bones off due to his ridiculous diabolical plan to conquer Castle Grayskull.
If Mad Max and Guardians of the Galaxy had a baby, you would have the new live-action SilverHawks movie. Cool, right? Yeah there’s even a guitar player here too! Since it’s a little to unknown property, let me educate you; Silverhawks is about a team of human heroes in the 29th century who were given metal bodies and hawk wings to stop organized crime in the Galaxy of Limbo. The leader, Quicksilver, and his team of Silverhawks (Bluegrass, Steelheart, and Copper Kid) fight against the evil mob boss, Mon*Star, in an attempt to re-capture the escaped criminal.
Now as awesome as all that sounds, be wary to look up YouTube clips from Silverhawks. Unfortunately, it might not hold up; maybe not even a little. THOUGH, the concepts, and a re-imagining core story, could be amazing.
Did I fail you? What are you’re favorite cartoons that NEED to be live-action movies?
